WE BELIEVE EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE A STRONG START.

The Oakland Starting Smart and Strong Initiative is a ten-year effort focused on creating universal access to high-quality early learning.
We envision a future where every Oakland child starts kindergarten ready to learn, grow, and thrive.

About Us

We are an active collaborative of nonprofits and local government agencies working to improve early care and education in Oakland.

Our Challenge

Oakland Unified Schools District (OUSD) serves about 3,400 kindergarteners and 600 transitional kindergarteners.

Only 40 percent of kindergarteners enter OUSD ready to learn.

Only 2 in 5 low-income students enter kindergarten with the early literacy skills essential to school success.

Our Work

We strengthen professional development and training for early education and care providers.

We offer parents, extended family members, and informal caregivers the skills and support they need to provide nurturing environments for children.

We align public and private systems to create a comprehensive early learning system focused on best practices, equitable distribution of resources, continuous improvement, and improved outcomes for all children.
